Welcome to my blog and my first real blog post! I am excited to be starting this Spring semester because this time next year it will be my final semester at San Diego State University. For this class, I am looking forward to getting practice at being a media professional and digital storyteller. Taking this class is not exactly something that I expected to take when I first entered the journalism program, but as I’ve moved through all the required courses I’ve learned how important it is to be versatile. We’ve learned in many JMS classes that just being a writer isn’t enough to be a journalist because today journalists have to be multimedia professionals. Still, I’m excited to be in this class because I feel like I have a lot to learn which I’m hoping will mean I get the most out of it. All of my classes this semester are like that, and it’s a little anxiety-inducing sometimes, but I realized that this is what I came here for.
The final project that we’ll be working on is one of the things I’m most excited for. That doesn’t mean I’m not nervous about it, but anxiety is just misplaced energy so I try to think about all the good that will come out of it to redirect that energy into positive actions. The final project will be a really good opportunity for me to hone in on how I can make an effective multimedia story without being overwhelmed by fast turnarounds. I know how helpful the practice is in building a website, thinking about how to apply the principles of design to online media, and even learning the basics of programming languages! That is also very exciting to me because I didn’t think I would have a chance to do that until my final semester at SDSU. Overall, I’m looking forward to being challenged, learning a lot and thinking about my future this semester.
